? $250,000 which obama originally proposed? $400,000 which he supposedly offered in a revised offer a week ago? and then, of course, the status of the sequester. we have $1.2 trillion in cuts over ten years, half from defense and half from nondefense discretionary spending. is there any indication if there's a deal today what they're talking about in terms of those two issues? >> we're reading tea leaves but we can say that on saturday there were the most senior-level staffers who were doing the nitty-gritty negotiations. we're told paper was exchanged back and forth meaning proposals being outlined and going back and forth with details. we're told the sticking points we'lly do center around that income threshold. where would you set a new tax level awhich everyone would pay higher taxes? how much income could you protect for the majority of americans? 250 is the number the president started with. as you point out he had withdrawn his earlier offer of $400,000 as the income threshold and ali al haidaris say that's because that was a part of a much bigger plan and now the expectation

the scenes, but as for publicly right now, melis melissa, the white house is not talking. president obama is basically launching this public campaign to pressure republicans. president obama came out on friday and urged them to get behind his plans. again today he sat down with david gregory, of course, during that exclusive interview on "meet the press" and urged republicans to act saying that it appears all they are interested in is protecting taxes for wealthy americans. republicans, by the way, lashed out at those comments saying the president seems more interested in placing blame instead of actually leading, but that at this point in time seems to be president obama's strategy to some extent, publicly pressuring republicans to act and to move on these negotiations. so that is where this stands right now. the white house monitoring everything that's going on the hill quite closely, but i can tell you, melissa, that there is a sense of optimism that is waning here at the white house. you can sense that when you talk to the officials here. >> well, the eternal optimist. vice president

the endgame of american military involvement and i spent the last third of the book cover and the obama administration. it's not been well covered by the media in terms of what his policy was in iraq. i actually learned a lot doing it. during the campaign, president obama talked a lot about the goal and certainly took out the troops here but i discovered in doing the book is actually the administration's own policy object is in iraq, don't object is far beyond the troops and extended to remaking the iraqi government and creating a power-sharing arrangement. it included a failed effort to negotiate an agreement so americans forces could stay in iraq in some numbers. >> failed agreement. >> they try to negotiate when i told a story. having failed, they claim credit for taking the troops out. but initially they did negotiate something to keep a modest number of troops, initially 10,035,004 whole variety of reasons it didn't work out. but he covered the start of the war and the middle of the war in the endgame for the military involvement. >> michael gordon, you covered the entire iraqi war
